Find a Community

Looking for a community to join? The Find a Community page gives you a bird's-eye view of all active communities near you on a full-screen interactive map. You can browse the list, filter by what matters to you, and join a community in just a few clicks. It's the fastest way to find your people.

Getting to Find a Community

Click the community switcher (the arrows icon next to the logo in the top navigation bar). A dropdown menu appears with three options under the Communities heading:

  • Discover what's around you — the general Discover page
  • Find a Community — the map-based community browser (this page)
  • Start a Community — create your own community

Select Find a Community to open the page. You'll need to be signed in — if you're not, you'll be redirected to the sign-in page first.

The Map

The page opens with a full-screen map centered on your location. Communities appear as coloured pins scattered across the map. Each pin's colour reflects the community's mission — for example, a community focused on sustainability and growth will have a different colour than one centered on entertainment.

You can zoom in and out, drag to explore different areas, and use the geolocation button (a small target icon in the top-right corner of the map) to re-centre the map on your current position.

Clicking a pin

When you click a community pin on the map, a popup appears showing:

  • The community name
  • A short description
  • An Open community button that takes you to the community's page

On desktop, clicking a pin also scrolls the left-side panel to that community's card so you can see more details.

Browsing the Community List

On desktop

A scrollable panel on the left side of the screen shows all the communities as cards. Each card displays:

  • Community name — in bold at the top
  • Description — a short summary of what the community is about
  • Member avatars — stacked profile pictures of up to four members, with a +N badge showing how many more members there are
  • Activity indicator — a small row of coloured squares (labelled "Health") that shows how active the community is. More filled squares means a more active community
  • Mission badges — labels like "growth", "sustainability", or "entertainment" that describe the community's goals

Click anywhere on a card to visit that community's page.

On mobile

On smaller screens, the community list appears as a sliding panel at the bottom of the screen, sitting above the bottom navigation bar. The panel has a drag handle (a small horizontal bar) at the top that you can use to resize it:

  • Swipe up on the drag handle to expand the panel and see more community cards
  • Swipe down to collapse it back down and reveal more of the map

The panel header shows Communities followed by the total number in parentheses, e.g. "Communities (20)". A floating purple + button next to the header lets you create a new community.

Filtering Communities

A Filters bar sits at the top of the map (on desktop) or at the very top of the screen (on mobile). Use it to narrow down the list:

  • Search by name — type in the text field to find communities by name. Results filter as you type
  • Languages — select one or more languages to find communities that operate in those languages
  • Goals — select one or more mission types (like Growth, Wellbeing, Entertainment, Sustainability, Discovery, or Organisation) to find communities aligned with your interests

Both the community list and the map markers update in real time as you adjust the filters.

Tip: You can combine multiple filters. For example, search for "garden" while filtering by the "Sustainability" goal to find eco-focused gardening communities near you.

Joining or Leaving a Community

Each community card has a three-dot menu (the vertical dots icon in the top-right corner of the card). Click it to see your options:

  • View details — opens the community's page where you can learn more
  • Join community — sends a request to join. Some communities accept members automatically, while others require approval from a moderator
  • Leave community — if you're already a member, this option lets you leave

If you've already requested to join but haven't been accepted yet, the menu shows Membership pending (greyed out) so you know your request is being reviewed.

Creating a New Community

If you don't find a community that fits, you can start your own. Click the purple + button in the top-right corner of the page (on desktop) or next to the panel header (on mobile). This takes you to the community creation form.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why don't I see any communities on the map? A: The map shows communities based on your profile location. If you're in an area without many communities yet, try zooming out to widen your search. You can also use the search bar to look for specific communities by name. And if nothing fits, why not start your own?

Q: What do the coloured pins mean? A: Each pin's colour is based on the community's missions. Communities with similar goals will have similar colours, making it easy to spot clusters of like-minded groups on the map.

Q: Can I use Find a Community without signing in? A: No — this page requires you to be signed in. If you'd like to explore without an account, try the Discover page instead, which is open to guests.

Q: How is the community list sorted? A: Communities are sorted by activity level, with the most active communities appearing first. The activity indicator on each card gives you a quick sense of how lively a community is.

Q: What's the difference between Find a Community and the Discover page? A: The Discover page shows a mix of nearby communities and local experiences (events, places, and more) in a card grid layout. Find a Community is focused entirely on communities, displayed on an interactive map with filtering options — ideal when you're specifically looking for a group to join.
